The latest events concerning organized crime and fan violence were the subject of an extraordinary meeting held this afternoon at the initiative of the Minister of Justice and Public Order.
The meeting was attended by the Minister of Justice, Mr. Marios Hartsiotis, the Chief of Police Mr. Stelios Papatheodorou, the Deputy Chief of Police Mr. Dimitris Demetriou, the heads of the police directorates of the cities and of the Motorized Rapid Action Unit (MAD), as well as officials of the Ministry of Justice and Public Order.
During the meeting, there was a thorough exchange of views on how to deal with the recent spate of incidents involving organised crime and violence at the venues and recommendations were made by the Police to take immediate preventive measures.
The Minister of Justice and Public Order described the situation as very difficult and stressed that events such as those of the last few days, which create the feeling that the level of security is low, must be dealt with and prevented.
He added that the Police is more aware of its operational capabilities and asked for recommendations for immediate action to deal with the situation from both the Police leadership and the Police Directorates of the cities. He requested that the problems be addressed immediately and in a decisive manner.
The Police Leadership undertook to examine operationally the feasibility of implementing the measures discussed during the meeting and to come back immediately to the Minister for their implementation.
