Environmental Expenditure in Industry at 0.15% of GDP[/I]
According to the results of a survey carried out by the Statistical Office, total expenditure on activities and actions related to environmental protection in industry amounted to €36.9 million. in 2021 and represented 0.15% of Gross Domestic Product, compared to €33.6 million or 0.15% in 2020.
By activity sector, manufacturing industries recorded expenditure of €32.2 million, mining and quarrying and electricity supply €4.4 million, and water treatment and supply €0.2 million. In the manufacturing sector, the other non-metallic mineral products industry incurred expenditure for environmental protection purposes of €13.1 million, the food industry €11.5 million, the pharmaceuticals and preparations industry €1.6 million, and the chemical substances and products industry €1.5 million.
In the environmental field, €15.3 million was spent on air pollution abatement, €12.6 million on solid waste management, €6.9 million on waste water management and €2.2 million on other activities such as the prevention or reduction of noise and vibration, the protection of soil and groundwater resources and the protection of natural resources and biodiversity.

Methodological Information
Definitions
Environmental Protection: is defined as any action or activity having as its primary purpose the collection, treatment, containment, prevention or elimination of pollution and pollutants or materials or any other type of environmental degradation resulting from the operation of a business.
Included are all actions or activities whose main purpose is to protect the environment, regardless of whether they are undertaken to comply with a legal regulation or to satisfy relevant requirements of the enterprise's customers or to improve the image and reputation of the enterprise. However, activities or actions which, although having a positive effect on the environment, are not carried out with the primary aim of protecting the environment are excluded.
Such activities include the management of solid waste and waste water, the prevention and elimination or reduction of air emissions, the protection of soil and groundwater, the prevention or reduction of noise and vibration, the preservation of protected areas and habitats, as well as the monitoring or measurement of the quality of the environment, the monitoring and reduction of waste production, etc.
Environmental protection expenditure: is the sum of investment in capital equipment and current expenditure.
