Health Minister Dr. Popi Kanari met today with her Greek counterpart Mr. Michalis Chrysochoidis, in the framework of the 1st Intergovernmental Meeting between Greece and Cyprus, which took place in Athens.

The meeting focused on efforts to conclude two Cooperation Agreements between the two countries in the field of Transplantation, on the initiative of the Cypriot side.

The main purpose of the Cooperation Agreements is to regulate the programme of cooperation between the Cyprus Transplantation Council (CM) and the National Transplantation Organisation (NTO) of Greece, through the transplantation centres of the NTO, the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Centre and the General Hospital "Hippokratio" of Thessaloniki.

The first Cooperation Agreement concerns the inclusion of Cypriot patients in the Greek register of prospective recipients for transplants that are not carried out in Cyprus, but also the supply of surplus organs to EOM. The second Cooperation Agreement concerns "Cross" kidney transplants.

As it was said during the meeting, the two sides are at the stage of defining the last details, i.e. one step before the signing of both Pacts.

On the agenda of today's discussion was also the issue of cooperation between the two countries in the field of Mental Health. On the part of the Greek State, interventions are being implemented through the development of the National Network of Mental Health Services. The axis of the reforms concerns the Prevention and Treatment of Addictions, as well as the labour integration of people with serious psychosocial problems to ensure their right to work.

Greece has prepared in cooperation with the World Health Organization the National Action Plan for Mental Health 2021 -2030 which includes for the first time costed structures, actions and programmes grouped in Ten Axes of Interventions. Already, with resources from the Recovery and Resilience Fund, new mental health structures have been developed and additional interventions are underway. In the case of Cyprus, the WHO will assist in the development of the National Mental Health Strategy, which is expected to be completed around mid-2024.

The accumulated experience and expertise of Greece and Cyprus can constitute another action to consolidate cooperation through the exchange of experiences and best practices.

The meeting also discussed the issue of concluding a transnational agreement for the supply of medicines by the National Organisation for the Provision of Health Services of Greece (EOPYY), to ensure innovative treatments to Cypriot patients, until an advantageous price is achieved by the Health Insurance Organisation of Cyprus.

Finally, they exchanged views on the prospects for cooperation between the two countries in the field of public health, for example on issues concerning the way Greek and Cypriot medical and dental residents practice their specialties in the hospitals of both countries.
