"Take it another way..., put waste in the cycle of life"

On Thursday, November 23, 2023, the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Mr. Peter Xenophontos and the Commissioner for the Environment Ms. Maria Panagiotou, the workshop "Take it another way..., put waste in the cycle of life". The workshop was organised by the Department of Environment in the framework of the European Week for Waste Prevention (EWWR), which started on 18 November 2023 and will end on Sunday 26 November 2023, in order to promote public awareness actions on sustainable use of resources and waste management. This year, more than 14 thousand actions from 29 European countries are being implemented.

The conference presented various policies and actions related to waste prevention and management, the circular economy, as well as good practices implemented by various organizations, businesses and schools in the region.

During the workshop, a parallel exhibition was held, in which actions related to the circular economy and waste prevention and reduction were presented.

In particular, policies implemented at European level, as well as policies that are expected, the LIFE IP Cyzero WASTE project, the results and good practices of packaging prevention from Green Dot, the cooperation platform for food donation from Friends of the Earth, ways of processing food waste from KES College, the actions carried out in the field of waste prevention and reduction were presented.

At the same time, during the exhibition, professors and students from the C' SETEK Limassol, in cooperation with the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, presented on the spot the processing of leftover food and vegetables by making soup, which the guests had the opportunity to try. In addition, ice cream was offered, thus giving the participants the opportunity to taste the edible ice cream containers and spoons from Papafilippou Ice Cream Company. Included in the exhibition material, was a sculpture made from metal scraps and other waste, which was made by Mr. Stavros Loizou Pao. The coffee of the event was provided by the company Vassos Eliades.

At the end of the event, the participants were offered sauces and jams made from "bad" fruits and vegetables by the Environment Department, because nothing is wasted.

A collection of clothes, toys and books with the possibility of exchange was held at the same time. At the same time, there were special bins for the collection of small electrical and electronic appliances and batteries from the WEEE Cyprus and AFES Cyprus schemes, giving participants the opportunity to bring their own items for recycling and exchange.

It is also noted that guests were invited to bring along their glass in which their drink was placed, as part of the "end of disposable plastic cups" action, as all food and drinks were offered in reusable containers.
