The 8th European Statistics Day will be celebrated on 20 October 2023. The European Statistics Day, which complements the World Statistics Day that takes place every five years, aims to highlight the important role that official statistics play in our society. The Statistical Office shares and supports this year's motto "Statistics guide development in a rapidly changing world."
Statistics are a vital tool for observing and analysing social developments. They can provide valuable information on trends, patterns and behaviours, enabling informed decision-making and the implementation of improved public policy at all levels of government.
Public policy plays a central role in sustainable development and is critical to the green transition. Effective implementation requires the provision of new and relevant indicators and reliable data that are rapidly available and comparable at international level. For public policy-making with actions aimed at improving household living and working conditions, tackling poverty and migration, housing policy, business competitiveness, etc., the use of official statistics by decision-makers is essential to contribute to successful policies.
At the same time, data sources are proliferating at an unprecedented rate due to digitisation and artificial intelligence. Innovation, including finding new ways to use and exploit these new data sources, is a major challenge. In this context, a continuous dialogue with users to meet their needs more broadly can bring significant benefits, such as faster and more efficient policy making that improves people's lives. Moreover, in an era of data abundance, it is important that the general public trust and use official statistics. This requires that the public is able to distinguish reliable data and use statistics correctly.
Official statistics must maintain their central role as a credible contribution to decision making, contributing to informed public debate, enhancing social and economic development and combating misinformation.
In summary, the message of European Statistics Day 2023 is that we must reinforce the central role of official statistics in creating a fairer and more sustainable society. As part of the celebration of European Statistics Day, the Statistical Office is launching the European Statistics Competition in Cyprus on 20 October 2023, which aims to promote the use of official statistics:
