The Statistical Service, the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth, the University of Cyprus and the Cyprus Statistical Society announce the completion of the National Phase of the European Statistical Competition 2023-24.
All secondary school students attending recognised educational institutions in Cyprus are eligible to participate in the national phase of the European Statistics Competition. The students participated in groups of two to three persons and for each group a responsible teacher was appointed by the school, whose role was to supervise the work, coordinate and guide the group. The teams participated in one of two categories, as follows. The First Task, in which a total of 154 teams consisting of 449 students took part, consisted of three parts as follows: (a) an essay on basic knowledge, (b) an essay on the use of official sources of statistical data and (c) an essay on the interpretation of statistical reports. The top 10 highest scoring teams in the High School category and the top 11 (due to a double tie for 10th place) in the Middle School category qualified for the Second Task, in which teams prepared a statistical data analysis presentation, the product of processing a dataset provided by the organizers. For the first time this year, in the national phase of the Competition, the teams presented their work before a jury. The final ranking of the teams, based on the score of the second paper, determined the winning team in each category.
The winning teams of the national phase, one from category A and one from category B, as well as the teams with the second highest score, are awarded. The winning teams receive the following prizes: a tablet for the teacher in charge of the winning team and €200 for each student member of the winning team. The teams in second place in the ranking receive the following prizes: for the teacher in charge of the team a graphic tablet and for each student in the team EUR 50. The top two teams in each category, in order of success, have the right to represent Cyprus in the European phase of the competition.
Information on the organisation of the award ceremony will be announced in due course.
