The award ceremony for the teams that excelled in the National Phase of the European Statistics Competition 2023-2024 took place today at the University of Cyprus. The ceremony was addressed by the Rector of the University of Cyprus and President of the Cyprus Statistical Society Professor Tasos Christofides, the representative of the Minister of Education, Sports and Youth Dr. In Cyprus, the competition, which has been established as an annual institution, is organised by the Statistical Service, the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth, the University of Cyprus and the Cyprus Statistical Society.

In Cyprus, the competition is organised by the Statistical Service, the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth, the University of Cyprus and the Cyprus Statistical Society. All secondary school students attending any officially recognised educational institution in Cyprus are eligible to participate. Students participate in groups of 2 to 3 persons and for each group a responsible teacher is appointed by the school as a coordinator-leader. The teams compete in one of two categories, Category A: High School Cycle and Category B: Gymnasium Cycle.

449 students took part in this year's competition, creating 154 teams. The first qualifying paper consisted of (a) an essay on basic knowledge, (b) an essay on the use of official sources of statistical data and (c) an essay on the interpretation of statistical reports. From the first task, the top 10 highest scoring teams in the high school category and the top 11 (due to a double tie for tenth place) in the middle school category qualified to prepare a statistical analysis presentation as a result of processing a data set. The jury evaluated the projects and at the end of the process the winners were chosen.
