The Security and Defence Academy of the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Cyprus and the Polish Maritime Academy, under the auspices of the European Security and Defence College, co-organised a seminar on "Protection of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Armed Conflict and the Post-War Period".

The activity was organized with the support of the Deputy Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Cyprus and the Cyprus National Commission for UNESCO, and took place in Larnaca from 19 to 22 September 2023.

On 19 September 2023, during the opening ceremony, the Director General of the Deputy Ministry of Culture Mrs. Emmanouela Lambrianidi and the Ambassador of Poland to Cyprus Mr. Marek Szczepanowski addressed the opening ceremony in the presence of the Ambassadors of Greece, Austria, Romania and other accredited diplomats in the Republic of Cyprus. Subsequently, the President of the Cyprus National Commission for UNESCO, Mrs. Lucia Loizou-Hatzigavriel, presented the topic "Protection of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Cyprus: Challenges for local communities in the post-war period."

A total of 21 participants from seven European countries (Greece, Poland, Georgia, Ukraine, Germany, Cyprus and Romania) took part in the seminar. On the side of the Republic of Cyprus, personnel from the Ministry of Defence, the National Guard and the Cyprus Police participated.

The seminar focused on intangible cultural heritage, which has a significant impact on the resilience of local society during conventional and hybrid conflicts. The seminar presented the link between intangible cultural heritage and social resilience during crises, armed conflicts and in post-conflict periods. In addition, participants were informed about the EU institutions, the competent bodies of the Member States involved in crisis and conflict prevention and management, as well as in post-conflict stabilisation and recovery, in view of the need to protect intangible cultural heritage.

Participants who successfully completed the seminar and the preceding online courses of the European Security and Defence College were awarded, at the end of the seminar, certificates of attendance signed by the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs Mr. Josep Borrell.
