The mapping of the coverage of women's sport by the media
In a round table discussion held today at the Olympic Hall, the Commissioner for Gender Equality, Ms. Josie Christodoulou and the Cyprus Association of Sports Journalists, in the presence of a representative of the Cyprus Sports Organisation, agreed as an action in the new National Strategy for Gender Equality to conduct a study and mapping of the current coverage, in a first stage, of women's and men's sport by the media.
The purpose of this mapping is to formulate policies and actions based on the resulting data and, through synergies with the CMO and other bodies, to hold discussions on the creation and consolidation of a gender equality mindset, without stereotypes and exclusions.
The aim of the discussion was, through feedback, to find ways for equal and fairer promotion of women's sport. The Commissioner was informed about the difficulties and reasons for the limited visibility of female athletes and women's sport in the media and discussed actions that the Office of the Gender Equality Commissioner can promote and include in the new National Strategy for Gender Equality (2024-2026) for gender mainstreaming in sport.
Ms. Christodoulou expressed the belief that "we can have more clicks at the same time with social responsibility" and that through the cooperation she has started with the NAC, the COA and other bodies, there will be an acceleration towards equality through meaningful actions.
