The President of the Republic Mr. Nicos Christodoulides arrived today at the First Primary School of Geroskipou, Centre VI, accompanied by his wife Mrs Philippa Karseras Christodoulides, where he exercised his right to vote for members of the European Parliament, Local Authorities and School Boards.
After exercising his right to vote, the President of the Republic answered questions from journalists.
In response to a remark that he voted quickly, Christodoulides replied, "I know what I want."
Asked if he voted for candidates for all positions, the President of the Republic said: "I voted for all, I had a specific opinion."
He added: "I want to call on the Cypriot people to participate massively in the elections, in this double electoral process. These are very important elections, the results of which will determine to a large extent issues that are relevant to our daily life on the one hand - and I am referring to the local government elections, which are being held for the first time since the reform - but also who will represent Cyprus in the European Parliament.
You know very well that Europe is the most important place for us. We also want to have a strong voice and role in the European Parliament for everything that is discussed, for everything that is decided and that directly affects our country. So I hope that there will be a massive participation - the conditions are there for this massive participation to take place - especially for our young people to participate in this electoral process. We are talking about a celebration of democracy, the results will be fully respected and a new day begins tomorrow."
In response to a reporter's remark that some people claim that the new system for local government, as it has been formulated, may not work, the President said that "we have before us a reform passed by the House of Representatives," adding that "those who claim that there are challenges and there may be problems are right, yes, we are facing them." He stressed, however, that what is important "is that we are ready to face those potential challenges and, if necessary, make changes."
"The message today is that local government with its much increased responsibilities has an important role to play. Therefore, it affects each and every one of us and in this context we should participate massively in the electoral process," he concluded.
