The General Election Supervisor Dr. Elricos A. Ilias, immediately after his statement at the "Theophilos Georgiades" Amphitheatre of the Press and Information Office on the percentage of voters' origin by 3 p.m., answered journalists' questions.
Asked to comment on the issue that has arisen with people with dual citizenship and what will apply, Elias said: "We were informed, we discussed the issue with the Legal Service as well. Let me tell you that the mutual information system, which is also imposed by the European Union, includes Europeans who have only one citizenship. In these cases, if a European who has citizenship in one country and has been living for the last six months in another country registers, there is a mutual information system so that he or she can only vote once. Under the legislation and the European acquis, a European citizen can only vote once and in one country.
Because of the fact that there is no system in case a European citizen has two nationalities, we are not going to take action against anybody, if by mistake or because they did not know it, they voted in their country of origin and voted in Cyprus, because they have a Cypriot identity card and they are registered in the permanent electoral roll of Cyprus. Both votes are valid, of course we cannot take a ballot paper out of the ballot box, as you understand. My information is that we are talking about three or four people."
