The Chief Electoral Officer, Dr Elricos A. Ilias, immediately after his statement at the "Theophilos Georgiades" Amphitheatre of the Press and Information Office on the percentage of voters' origin by 12 a.m,
Asked to comment on reports of students in Thessaloniki who, after completing the procedure to vote in Greece, their details were not found on the list and as a result they were unable to exercise their right to vote, Mr. Ilias said: "I have been informed. It is an issue that we are looking into with the overseas curator to see exactly how it has happened. We are talking about one or two cases that are being looked into."
Asked about reports of a complaint by a mayoral candidate about bribing voters to photograph ballots, Mr. Ilia replied, "I have seen some publications. I had talked about other issues with that mayor, but he did not submit a complaint to me."
In response to a question regarding how the election process for Turkish Cypriots is going, Mr. Ilia said that he visited the Department of Urban Planning and Zoning where Turkish Cypriots turn up and that the process is running smoothly. He added that from the data so far the turnout rate is at the level of the last European elections. Mr. Elias also mentioned that he visited the special polling centre of the Kormakitis Community in Agios Dometios and that the process is also running smoothly there, urging the public not to wait until 5 o'clock to vote.
Asked whether there were any "irregularities" in the process, Mr. Ilia stressed that individual incidents can in no way overshadow the smooth conduct of the electoral process and that they cannot tarnish this day of democracy.
Asked to answer how the 2.7% figure of Turkish Cypriots translates into real numbers, the Chief Electoral Officer replied that it represents 2.7% of 103 Turkish Cypriots.000 Turkish Cypriots and that he expects this figure to increase this afternoon, since, he added, Turkish Cypriots generally turn out in an exemplary manner to vote in the European elections.
Responding to a journalist's remark that there is a significant discrepancy between the turnout rate of this year's elections compared to the presidential elections, Mr. Ilia replied that it might be due to the day and that, nevertheless, he estimates that the final turnout rate will be higher than 60%.
