The General Election Supervisor Dr. Elikkos Ilias visited the special polling centre, where people from the Kormakitis Community vote, at the 3rd Primary School of Agios Dometios.
During his visit, Mr. Ilias answered questions from journalists.
The General Electoral Officer said that in special polling stations in Ayios Dometios and Dherynia 252 interned people are voting, of which 66 are from Kyrenia District, specifically Kormakitis, and 186 interned people are from Famagusta District. He added that 44 of the 66 internees from Kyrenia District have already voted in Agios Dometios, while in Dherynia, by 10 p.m., 10 voters had voted for members of the European Parliament and 16 for Local Government. "Voting is running smoothly and we are optimistic that the majority of the interned people will vote for the occupied communities."
In response to a reporter's suggestion that the process is simpler for the interned people, since they only get two ballots - one for their community and one for members of the European Parliament - and that most of the occupied communities have already been declared, Mr. Elias replied in the affirmative, adding that the Ministry of Interior offers all the facilities to enable the interned people to vote
He added: "Most of Kyrenia District have already voted. I have information that they are also going to Deryneia to [VOTE FOR] Famagusta province. We hope that the majority of our IDPs will make it and vote."
In response to a reporter's report that he contacted the office of the Head of Humanitarian Affairs Ms. Anna Aristotelous this morning, where he was informed that there were eight cases of people requesting to change polling stations, Elias said that these arrangements were being offered, adding: "We are doing everything we can to facilitate our stranded people who vote with any Republic of Cyprus document as long as it contains their photograph. When these elections are over, we will see what we can do to give all our incarcerated people a new identity card."
