The Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts unanimously decided to elect as its first Honorary Members Kyriakos K. Nikolaou, Christoforos C. Pissarides and Loukas G. Christoforou.

Pursuant to its Founding Law, the Academy may elect Honorary Members for significant services to the Academy, the Republic or humanity. The elected Honorary Members, together with the late Vassos Karagiorgis (1929-2021), formed the four-member Founding Committee of the Academy following their appointment by the Council of Ministers (Decision 80825, dated 13/06/2016), and were responsible for the organization and launch of the Academy, and elected the 12 Founding Members of the Academy on 10 April 2019, the date of the launch of the Academy. From the date of election of the Founding Members of the Academy, the Founding Committee Members were renamed as Transitional Ordinary Members for a period of five years. At the end of the transitional period on 10 April 2024, the term of the Transitional Full Members will expire.

In view of the imminent expiration of the term of the Transitional Full Members of the Academy, the Plenary Assembly of the Academy decided, as a sign of minimum obligation, to proclaim Kyriakos K. Nikolaou, Christoforos C. Pissarides and Loukas G. Christoforou as the first Honorary Members of the Academy, noting that it would automatically do the same for Vassos Karagiorgis if he were alive. These three Honorary Members rendered the highest service to the Academy, since it would not have existed without their contribution. They have also rendered significant service to the Republic and to humanity because of their outstanding scientific and social contributions, which is confirmed by the multitude of highest honours they have received, as well as their election as members of other Academies.
