The President and Members of the Cyprus Economy and Competitiveness Council today presented the Annual Report for the year 2021 to the Minister of Finance, Mr.Constantinos Petrides.

The President of the Council, Mr. Takis Clerides briefed the Minister on the activities and work of the Council in 2021 and expressed the Council's thanks for the confidence the Government has shown in the work carried out by the Council.

In the Report, special reference is made to the work of the Long-Term Strategy for the Sustainable Development of the Cyprus economy, which was formulated and completed through an intensive dialogue with a wide range of public and private sector stakeholders. The Council worked intensively in 2021 for the completion of the new Strategy "Vision 2035" and the selection of the new economic model, which is oriented towards strengthening the sustainability, resilience and international competitiveness of the Cypriot economy.

Another important milestone for the Council in 2021 was its contribution to the preparation of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.

The Progress Report also presents the 2nd Competitiveness Report for Cyprus, which documents the comparative advantages, weaknesses and challenges faced by the Cypriot economy, and provides recommendations for addressing the challenges and enhancing its competitiveness.

The Minister of Finance thanked the Council for the information and the excellent work carried out, as well as for the excellent cooperation with the Council, and stressed that a number of measures implemented by the Council have been implemented by the European Commission. The good performance of the Cypriot economy observed during the period of the health crisis is no coincidence, nor is the positive growth rate of the economy observed now. The Council's recommendations, which, as the Minister said, are included in the Strategic Plans and Budgets of the Ministries, played an important role in this.

In conclusion, the Minister of Finance reiterated the Government's support to the Council for the remarkable work it is doing.

The 2021 Progress Report and information material relating to the Council's work and policy recommendations are available on the Council's website (http://ecompet.cy).
