MPs Andreas Pasiourtidis and Rita Theodorou Superman, head and member, respectively, of the Cypriot delegation to the Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly (MPA) participated last night in an enlarged meeting of the Assembly's Bureau in Amman. The agenda of the session included, at the decision of the President of the CMC Mr. Enaam Mayara, a discussion on the situation in Cyprus in the wake of the recent incidents in Pyla, following the letter-dialogue sent by the Speaker of the House of Representatives Mrs. Anita Demetriou on this issue to the Speakers of Parliaments of a large number of states and international and regional parliamentary organisations.

Cypriot MPs noted that the immediate reaction of the President of the Assembly to the President of the House of Representatives' letter demonstrates the strong and continued interest of the organisation in the situation in Cyprus. They noted that the recent incidents in the Pyla area constitute the most serious violation of the status quo in the buffer zone since the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974 and underlined that the organised threats and violence against members of the UN Peacekeeping Force, which both the Secretary-General and the UN Security Council have condemned, constitute a crime under international law and are contrary to all relevant UN resolutions.

The Cypriot MPs also pointed out that the humanitarian reasons put forward by the occupying force as a pretext to justify its illegal actions are completely refuted, as Pyla is a bicommunal village within the buffer zone, inhabited by an indigenous population and controlled by the legitimate government of the Republic of Cyprus and supervised by the UN peacekeeping force, in accordance with its terms of reference. These actions, the Cypriot MPs stressed, are part of Turkey's wider plans and machinations to the detriment of the sovereignty and sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus and are aimed, as demonstrated in this case, at gaining a military advantage at a key point in the buffer zone, with the aim of occupying the territory of the buffer zone and extending the alleged "sovereignty" of the illegal secessionist entity subordinate to Turkey to the occupied territories of the Republic of Cyprus.

Such unacceptable actions, the Cypriot MPs underlined, seriously undermine the ongoing efforts to resume negotiations towards a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem, on the basis of a bizonal bicommunal federation, in accordance with international law, relevant United Nations resolutions and the principles and values of the European Union.

At the request of the Cypriot delegation, it was decided that the issue raised in relation to Cyprus should be raised for discussion at the next session of the CSM Plenary, as well as during the meetings of Assembly officials in the margins of the UN General Assembly.
