Signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy of Cyprus and the Minister of Digital Governance of Greece
The deepening of cooperation between Greece and Cyprus in the field of digital transformation was the focus of an official meeting between the Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy of Cyprus, Mr. Mr. Nicodemus Damianou with the Minister of Digital Governance of Greece, Mr. Dimitris Papastergiou. The meeting took place at the Ministry of Digital Governance, following the visit of the Greek Minister to Cyprus last November.
The two sides signed today, in Athens, a Memorandum of Cooperation aimed at implementing an action plan that will significantly improve the way their public services operate. The subject of the MoU is the exchange of best practices and experience, as well as the provision of know-how for the development of applications and electronic services to better serve citizens.
The cooperation is launched with the "Digital Citizen" application (Gov.cy Digital Citizen), based on the Gov.gr Wallet application, which has already been successfully implemented by the Ministry of Digital Government of Greece. In this context, the two states intend to cooperate in the development and further adaptation of these applications, as well as the necessary digital infrastructure, including electronic identity and signature, in order to further facilitate the interaction and transactions of citizens and businesses with the state. "It is a great pleasure to host my Cypriot counterpart Mr. Nicodemus Damianou at the Ministry today and to take together another step towards the expansion of our cooperation. Our goal is, after all, a common one: the use of technology for the benefit of our citizens. In recent years, through Gov.gr Wallet, we have provided Greek citizens with a valuable tool that significantly improves their daily life and reduces bureaucracy, and we regularly enhance it with new documents and features. This process has provided us with valuable knowledge and experience, which we would like to share. At the same time, we wish to share knowledge from similar efforts in Cyprus. In this direction we are working so that, in the future, through the mutual recognition of Gov.gr Wallet and Gov.cy Digital Citizen documents, we can further facilitate the movements and transactions of citizens in both countries. This is a great project, considering the ties that unite us. Apart from being emotional, of course, they are also practical. Thousands of students, business people and citizens in general move between Greece and Cyprus."
The Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy of Cyprus, Mr. Nicodemus Damianou, after thanking the Minister for the hospitality and the highly constructive meeting, said: "Today we are putting into practice the excellent cooperation we have so far developed with Greece, both at bilateral and European level, on digital transformation issues. The first step is the implementation of the Digital Citizen application - which was announced by the President of the Republic of Cyprus himself, Mr Nikos Christodoulides - on the basis of the Gov.gr wallet. Digital modernisation is an issue of particular concern to both the Cypriot and Greek Governments. A priority of utmost importance, with a horizontal impact on our society and economy. That is why we are proceeding with a comprehensive plan both to modernise our internal functioning as a state and to upgrade the level of service we provide to citizens and businesses. Greece has taken significant steps, especially in the digitisation of services and has already successfully adopted useful tools that substantially facilitate the daily life of citizens. I believe that we have a lot to learn from these practices that the Greek Government has implemented, but also a lot to teach each other."
