The important issue of tackling juvenile delinquency was discussed at length at an inter-ministerial meeting between the Minister of Justice and Public Order, Mrs.Stefis Drakos and the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth, Mr. Prodromos Prodromos, with the participation of the Commissioner for Child Protection, Ms Desfo Mihailidou and the Chief of Police, Mr Stelios Papatheodorou.
During the discussion, both the Minister of Justice and the Minister of Education stressed the fact that juvenile delinquency is a widespread social problem, which also occurs in schools.
Through the fruitful exchange of views, useful suggestions were made in order to create an appropriate structure involving the services involved in order to act immediately.
An important suggestion that was put on the table concerns the introduction of the institution of the ombudsman, which will be considered in the future. At the same time, there was a suggestion to provide training for parents/guardians to prevent this phenomenon.
Subsequently, the whole issue will be handled by a working group in which the State services involved will be involved in order to further study the suggestions that have been made.
For her part, the Minister of Justice thanked those present for the constructive discussion and especially the Commissioner for Child Protection, noting that a second meeting will be held to study the progress report by the working group so that further decisions can be taken.
