The Minister of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth, Mr Prodromos Prodromou, participated yesterday, Tuesday, January 25, in the Informal Meeting of Ministers responsible for Higher Education, Research and Innovation, under the French Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

In the context of the Summit, the Minister participated in two morning sessions in which French academics spoke about the future of Europe's universities and the principles and values of research in Europe and in the world. In the afternoon, the participating Ministers were invited to discuss the issue of strengthening transnational cooperation between universities and the future of Europe.

In response to questions, the Minister referred to the ways in which "the long-term objective of developing and merging European universities into a university with a pan-European and international dimension" can be achieved. In particular, he spoke of the need to align national legislation and harmonise national higher education systems with the European Higher Education Area, calling on Member States to set up national committees for this purpose. He also underlined the importance of creating a single European system for evaluating the curricula of European universities and highlighted the important role of the EU Expert Group in coordinating efforts for a more successful implementation of the strategy for international cooperation.

Mr Prodromou also spoke about the catalytic role played by European University Networks in attracting the best talent and enhancing the competitiveness of European universities. In conclusion, he said that Cyprus actively supports the institution, already implementing a funding mechanism for Cypriot universities that have been successful in participating in the networks.
