Cyprus was re-elected to the Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in the vote that took place in London on Friday, 1 December 2023, in the framework of the 33rd General Assembly of the Organization. Cyprus was a candidate for re-election as one of the 20 Category C Council members.

Cyprus was first elected as a Category C member of the Council of the IMO in 1987. Since then, due to our country's successful and significant work within the Council and other organs of the Organisation, its active participation in the discussions of the Organisation and its approach to the challenges of the industry, Cyprus has been re-elected continuously in the same category.

Cyprus' participation in the Council of the Organisation is particularly important as it allows it to participate in strategic decision-making processes that directly affect shipping, while at the same time enhancing the image of Cyprus as a member of the Council of the Organisation. "It is a great success for our Cyprus to be re-elected to the Council of the International Maritime Organization, which proves the strong position of our country in international maritime affairs. Warm thanks to all my colleagues at the Ministry of Shipping and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their teamwork and unstinting cooperation in promoting our candidature".
