With a 97% return rate of irregular migrants out of new asylum applications, Cyprus ranks 1st among the countries of the European Union for the period March-September 2023. At the same time, Cyprus ranks 4th among the 27 European Union member states in absolute numbers of returns and deportations of irregular migrants, according to data for Q2 2023 published by Eurostat. Based on the available data, in the period April-June 2023, there were a total of 1,775 returns of irregular migrants, mainly to Sub-Saharan African countries (Nigeria, Congo, Cameroon), countries that Cyprus has targeted with specific measures and information campaign.

As a result of a series of measures implemented by our country, there has been a decrease in the number of asylum applications in recent months. According to the final official figures of the Ministry of Interior, 723 asylum applications were received in September[/B]. At the same time, the balance of arrivals and returns is also positive in September, when there were 824 returns and deportations of irregular migrants.

The measures implemented by Cyprus to manage the migration issue were the focus of the discussion of the Ministers of Interior and Migration of Cyprus, Greece, Spain, Italy and Malta during the MED5 Summit, which took place on 6-7 October in Thessaloniki, in the presence of the Vice President of the European Commission, Mr.

Mr Ioannou informed the attendees extensively about the policy followed by Cyprus, with emphasis on deterring and reducing arrivals and increasing returns.

Mr Ioannou informed the attendees about the policy followed by Cyprus, with emphasis on deterring and reducing arrivals and increasing returns. The results have been positive so far, but the Minister of Interior explained that the situation remains worrying and calls for vigilance.

Amid the positive balance, the debate on the bill for the creation of a Deputy Ministry of Immigration and Asylum started today in the Parliamentary Committee on Interior in the presence of the Minister of Interior. As Mr. Ioannou said during the Committee meeting, by bringing all the competent agencies and departments responsible for immigration and asylum under the umbrella of a Deputy Ministry, the State will be able to implement an integrated and coordinated strategy in terms of migration management. The main pillars of the draft law are the prevention of irregular flows and the fight against networks of people smugglers, the further acceleration of the processing of asylum applications, the improvement of conditions in reception and accommodation centres, the integration of legal residents into the labour market and society, the promotion of a policy on unaccompanied minors, etc.
