Cyprus has the highest performance progress among Member States
Cyprus is ranked for the third consecutive year among the "Strong Innovators" and is the country with the highest progress (39%), compared to 2017, according to the European Innovation Scoreboard 2024, demonstrating the increased momentum of the research and innovation ecosystem, which creates a stronger outlook. It is the only country in Southern Europe to be ranked as a Strong or Leading Innovator.
Cyprus remains a pan-European leader in networking between ecosystem actors. It also has an attractive research system and there has been a significant increase in innovative SMEs. Cyprus performs best on indicators in terms of publications, as a result of collaboration between public research organisations and the private sector, in international scientific publications and in collaborations between innovative companies with each other or with other actors.
Public and private investment in R&D, venture capital investment in innovative enterprises and environmental sustainability are recorded as the three areas of significant improvement for the country.
The Chief Scientist for Research, Innovation and Technology and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Research and Innovation Foundation (R&I Foundation), Mr. Dimitris Skouridis, said that it is a significant success for the country. The policies, the funding programmes of the Foundation and the incentives provided by the State to strengthen the whole Research and Innovation (R&I) ecosystem are bearing fruit.
"As the R&D funding agency, but also in my capacity as Chief Scientist, I would like to congratulate all the players in the ecosystem for the high quality work they produce, leading to international accolades. As Chief Scientist, but also as a PI, we are working methodically, in collaboration with all stakeholders, to further develop the ecosystem."
