The Forestry Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment is pleased to inform the public that during the award ceremony of the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, held in Limassol on 29/2/2024, the nature study trail "Kalidonia" in Platres was awarded.
The "Cyprus Hospitality Awards" is an institution of the Deputy Ministry of Tourism that recognizes and rewards people who are active in the wide range of tourism and hospitality. The award won by this trail is included in the second pillar of the award for Online Reputation.
The award ceremony was attended by the Deputy Director of the Forestry Department, Dr. Savvas Iezekiel, who was presented with the award.
The nature study trail "Kalidonia", which is managed by the Forestry Department, is three kilometres long, starting near Troodos Square or Psilo Dentro in Pano Platres, passes through dense forest and follows a course along the Kryos River, which has permanent running water. The trail was built in 1983 by the Forestry Department and is under its management.
There are several crossing points of the river, where passages have been constructed, while in some others the walker will necessarily step on wet stones.
The entire route is located within the Troodos National Forest Park, which is also a Natura 2000 site. The vegetation is completely natural, rich and with high density. Along the bed, the wetland vegetation is dominated by planes, alders and ivy. On the slopes, the higher parts are dominated by black pine, which is gradually replaced by rough pine at lower altitudes. Along the route there are several endemic plants and animals.
One of the most interesting parts of the route is the Caledonia Waterfall, located two-thirds of the way along the route (starting from the top). The water falls impressively from a height of 13 meters onto hard rock.
