The Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry, Mr. George Papanastasiou returned today from Cairo, where, on the sidelines of the EGYPES 2024 energy exhibition and conference, he had yesterday a series of contacts on energy issues, including a private meeting with the Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Mr. Tarek El Molla.

Specifically, Mr. Papanastasiou and El Molla had a very constructive meeting in the afternoon, during which they reviewed the latest developments in the hydrocarbons sector in the Eastern Mediterranean, with emphasis on the very encouraging results of the appraisal drilling in the discovery of natural gas "Cronos", within Block 6 of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the Republic of Cyprus. The two Ministers also discussed ways to strengthen energy cooperation between Cyprus and Egypt, including to accelerate the development of the cluster of natural gas fields southwest of Cyprus, with the transfer of gas from the Cypriot EEZ to Egypt being one of the main options for their exploitation.

The meeting with the Egyptian Minister of Petroleum was preceded by separate meetings with the Secretary General of the East Mediterranean Gas Forum, Mr. Osama Mobarez, as well as with senior executives of Eni, Total Energies, Chevron and Exxon Mobil, to discuss their research programmes and the rapid development of their discoveries within the EEZ of Cyprus.

Mr. Papanastasiou also visited Cyprus' stand at the EGYPES 2024 exhibition.
