On the occasion of the World Thalassaemia Day, which is celebrated every 8th of May, the façade of the Presidential Palace was symbolically illuminated in red, in the presence of a delegation of the Pancyprian Thalassaemia Association. The delegation was received at the Presidential Palace by the Deputy Government Spokesman Mr. Yiannis Antoniou, who expressed the satisfaction of the state for the fact that our country maintains the scepter in the global struggle for the prevention, control and management of thalassaemia, as a result of difficult but targeted struggles, with the strength of the unity of all relevant bodies of the state and society.

Yiannis Antoniou stressed that the state owes a huge debt of gratitude to the International Thalassaemia Federation for its tireless efforts to empower, continuously educate and keep global interest at the forefront of thalassaemia issues.

"Cyprus, he continued, is leading actions aimed at improving the quality of life of patients, including through the establishment of the first global National Thalassaemia Committee and the adoption of a National Thalassaemia Strategy, with a focus on achieving further progress in the control, prevention and management of thalassaemia, including the provision of genetic counselling, prenatal screening and advanced medical care to affected individuals."

In addition, the Ministry of Health is also initiating the signing of a memorandum of cooperation with the International Thalassaemia Federation in order to further strengthen our cooperation on this important issue."

The delegation of the Pancyprian Thalassaemia Association consisted of Miltos Miliades (President), Elena Kogorozi, Marios Piripitsis and Vasiliki Pastou.
