[PIO] Cyprus and Israel Energy Ministers met in Tel Aviv to promote energy cooperation between the two countries

Minister of Energy, Trade and Industry George Papanastasiou visited Tel Aviv today, where he met with his counterpart, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure of the State of Israel Eli Cohen, at the latter's invitation, in order to discuss issues related to the strengthening of cooperation between Cyprus and Israel in the energy sector.

Specifically, the two Ministers agreed, inter alia, to promote joint energy projects, with particular emphasis on close coordination to facilitate the construction of the electrical interconnection between Israel, Cyprus and Greece (Great Sea Interconnector).

In addition, they stressed the need to reach an early agreement on the Aphrodite-Israel issue, and reviewed various initiatives related to the development of natural gas infrastructure in the Eastern Mediterranean, including "The Cyprus Gateway" initiative to transport natural gas to Europe via Cyprus from fields in Israel and the wider region.

The meeting between the two ministers, which concluded with the issuance of a Joint Statement, was preceded by a visit to the Reading power plant in Tel Aviv, a site being considered as a possible site for the construction of the Great Sea Interconnector conversion station.
