Mrs. Rita Theodorou Superman yesterday represented the Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly (MPA) at the 10th Session of the Conference of the States Parties to the United Nations Convention against Corruption of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), taking place this week in Atlanta.

In an audio-visual message, Ms. Superman said that the CMC has long been involved in the global problem of corruption and is recognized as a trusted strategic partner of the UN and other specialized international bodies for sharing best practices, developing multifaceted action to address corruption.

The Cypriot Councillor pointed out that corruption is directly linked to systemic inefficiencies such as democratic deficit, poor administration and restrictions on freedom of the press, which are exploited by criminal organisations. She also noted the link between corruption and the rise of illicit trafficking in arms, drugs and people, particularly in conflict-ridden countries.

She further referred to the serious consequences of corruption in the environmental sector and the obstruction of the achievement of environmental goals, such as taking measures to mitigate the effects of climate change and promoting the energy transition. In conclusion, she stressed the importance of involving parliaments to enhance the effectiveness of climate initiatives at all levels to ensure that strong and effective government policies are adopted and implemented, including the mobilisation and proper allocation of scarce climate finance.
