Councillor Mrs. Rita Theodorou Superman represented the Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly (MPA) at a Joint Session of the 66th Session of the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs and the 32nd Session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice of the UN Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention, held today in Vienna.

In a visualized message, Superman stressed that growing political instability and complex security challenges in Europe, the Middle East and the Sahel require the international community's vigilance to protect democracy and democratic institutions in full compliance with international legitimacy. She pointed out that terrorist and other criminal organisations are taking advantage of this unstable situation and technological innovations to continuously fuel tension and violence.

The Cypriot Councillor noted, in this regard, that the CSM is particularly monitoring the situation with regard to two security threats in the Middle East and the Gulf region. The first, she said, concerns the trafficking of Captagon drugs, now using drones. In this regard, she noted that, at the request of the UN Security Council, the CBM will prepare a comprehensive report on the malicious use of new and emerging technologies by terrorist and criminal organisations.

The second threat, Mr. Superman noted, relates to the smuggling and trafficking of migrants originating from North and Sub-Saharan Africa and the destabilization of countries in the region.

In conclusion, Ms Superman noted that the CSM is preparing to launch a campaign to better inform and further support its member parliaments in adopting legislative measures to prevent and combat the smuggling and trafficking of migrants and to effectively prosecute the perpetrators.
