The World Conference of Women Parliamentarians, organized by the UN Office for the Suppression of Terrorism (UNOCT), in the framework of the "Parliamentary Participation in Preventing and Combating Terrorism" Programme, concluded today in Doha. The Conference was attended by Theodorou Superman, in her capacity as Special Rapporteur of the Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly (MPA) on the fight against terrorism and organised crime.

In her intervention, Theodorou Superman pointed out that in cases of conflict and violent extremism, the human rights of women and girls are most affected. She noted that the CSM has always attached importance to the promotion of policies for gender equality and the improvement of economic, political and social conditions for women and, to this end, prepares studies and provides scientific support to its members for actions aimed at addressing the specific challenges for women in the Mediterranean region.

The Cypriot Rapporteur noted, in this context, the creation of the Women's Parliamentary Forum of the CBSS in 2022, with the aim to serve as a platform to promote the full political participation and economic and social empowerment of women in the Mediterranean region. Theodorou Superman also announced that, as the Assembly's Special Rapporteur on Counter-Terrorism, she is promoting the inclusion of the UN Women, Peace and Security Agenda in the Forum's priorities for the 2024-2026 period, highlighting the contribution of women in strengthening cooperation for peace and security in the Euro-Mediterranean and Gulf regions.

Theodorou Superman stressed the CSM's firm commitment to ensuring the equal and meaningful participation of women in leadership roles and in counter-terrorism efforts. In this regard, she expressed disappointment at the under-representation of women in policy-making, especially in security-related areas. The Cypriot MEP stressed the importance of promoting policies that would ensure not only the participation of women in decision-making, but also their equal representation in high-level political offices. Theodorou Superman pointed out that this cannot be achieved only through education and women's empowerment, but it is necessary to establish a gender-based quota in terms of representation in institutions. Theodorou Superman stressed that the CSM actively contributes to international and regional cooperation to address global issues, including the fight against terrorism, by promoting the exchange of information between states and international actors, as only through collective efforts, she said, will we be able to address the root causes of these phenomena.

In conclusion, Ms. Theodorou Superman informed the participants about the cooperation of the CSM with the Executive Directorate of the UN Security Council Committee on Combating Terrorism (CTED) in preparing a Report on the Malicious Use of Artificial Intelligence and New and Emerging Technologies, in which, as she pointed out, the gender dimension should also be considered.
