The 4th mission of the Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly (MPA) to the Middle East, between 4 and 7 September 2023, in which Councillor Rita Theodorou Superman, member of the Cypriot delegation to the Assembly, participated, has been completed.
In Amman, the starting point of the mission, the participants met with the Jordanian Minister of Investment Mr. Kholoud Al Saggaf and the UN Assistant Secretary General and Deputy Commissioner General for Refugee Relief and Access to Work in the Middle East (UNRWA) Ms. Leni Stenseth. In Ramallah, the second stop of the mission, meetings were held with the Prime Minister of Palestine, Mr Mohammad Shtayyeh, and with the President of the Palestinian National Council, Mr Rawhi Fattouh. The final destination of the mission was Jerusalem, where the participating MPs were received by the President of the Knesset, Mr. Amir Ohama and had separate meetings with the UN Special Coordinator for Middle East Peace, Mr. Tor Wennesland and the Commander of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon, Mr. Aroldo Lazaro Saenz (UNIFIL).
During the above meetings, in the presence of members of the Turkish delegation, Mrs. Theodorou Superman referred to the invasion and continued occupation of the territory of the Republic of Cyprus by Turkey. She also criticized the illegal colonization of the occupied territories, as well as the instrumentalization of the migration issue by the occupying power, which channels illegal migrants through the occupied territories to the areas under the control of the Government of Cyprus.
Mrs. Theodorou Superman noted that the trilateral cooperation that Cyprus and Greece are developing with states in the region, which also extends to the parliamentary level, can contribute to the goal of achieving peace and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean. Finally, he referred to the very good level of Cyprus' bilateral relations with both Jordan and Israel and the prospects for further strengthening cooperation in areas of common interest.
