Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou is travelling to Thessaloniki today, where he will participate in the meeting of the group of the five MED5 member states, namely Cyprus, Greece, Spain, Italy, Greece and Malta. The purpose of the meeting is to examine ways of further coordination to jointly address the complex challenges posed by increased migratory flows in the five frontline EU Member States.
The meeting is expected to focus on the issue of strengthening the external dimension of the EU's migration policy, as a key pillar of the holistic approach to the problem. In this context, Mr Ioannou will reiterate Cyprus' position on European support for Lebanon, as a country hosting a large number of Syrian migrants. The aim of the Cypriot Minister's proposal is to prevent a possible collapse of Lebanon, which would exacerbate the crisis throughout the EU.
Furthermore, the MED5 Home and Immigration Ministers will stress the need for the European Parliament to adopt the Pact on Migration and Asylum before the end of the current legislative period, in the light of the recent agreement reached at diplomatic level to support Member States facing a crisis situation.
Finally, Mr Ioannou will highlight the need to provide additional assistance to frontline states through the Internal Affairs Funds, so that countries are able to respond more effectively to the management of increased migratory flows, through the development of cooperation and the implementation of joint programmes.
