[PIO] Cooperation agreement with British hospitals in the field of Hepatology to be finalised in October

Health Minister Dr. Poppy Kanari accompanied by the Executive Director of OKYPY Dr. Cyprus Stavridis and transplant surgeon Dr. Michalis Papoulas, held yesterday successive meetings with the directors of King's College and Royal Free London Hospitals, in order to conclude a cooperation agreement for the scientific support of the Hepatology Clinic to be established in Cyprus. The meeting with the competent committee of King's College was attended by the Cypriot Professor Dr Cyprus Nicolaides.

The Minister of Health presented before the competent committees of the two hospitals a technical agreement, which includes the following pillars.

- Recruitment of doctors specialising in hepatology and a commitment to respond immediately to emergencies.

- Training in the United Kingdom of doctors and nurses to be recruited on the basis of a specific programme and timetable.

- Training in the United Kingdom of doctors and nurses to be recruited on the basis of a specific programme and timetable.

- Specialist opinion from the 2 hospitals on liver biopsies to be performed in Cyprus.

- Pre-transplant screening of patients who will potentially require transplantation for early and effective management.

- Monitoring of patients' post-operative course and early intervention to prevent any complications.

The Minister of Health expressed her satisfaction with the positive response of the two hospitals to the proposals put before them.

The competent committees of the two hospitals confirmed that they now have a clear picture of Cyprus' needs in the field of hepatology. The finalisation of the agreement is expected within the next fortnight.

The Minister of Health, Dr Poppy Kanari, finally stated that the creation of a Hepatology Clinic is now a foregone conclusion and that OKYPY will adopt a more holistic approach to addressing the problems faced by patients, making use of the existing infrastructure and health professionals of the public hospitals.
