In Limassol today, August 23, 2023, the Deputy Minister of Social Welfare, Marilena Evangelou, held contacts in the framework of her visits to institutions, shelters, but also with organized groups, institutions and Local Authorities in order to strengthen synergies with institutions offering social work.
In the morning, Ms Evangelou visited the Limassol Association of Parents and Friends of Children with Special Needs and had the opportunity to tour and discuss with the management and the beneficiaries of the two Day Centres, "The House of Marios" and "Ekaterinio".
In a statement, Ms. Evangelou assured that the Government is working to further strengthen the inclusion, understanding and support of people with special needs and their families by supporting initiatives and partnerships.
"I feel both moved and lucky when I am given the opportunity to be among these remarkable children, each with their own unique character and capabilities, but also with people who are at their service and helping them to grow. For me, these visits are the best part of the job.
The Government is focusing on the rights and potential of children with special needs in order to improve the quality of life for them and their families through the implementation of actions and reforms that will develop new prospects for social inclusion," he said.
Earlier, the Deputy Minister of Social Welfare visited the EOKA Fighters' Memorial, where she attended a meeting with the President, members of the Board of Directors and the management of the Memorial. During the visit, views were exchanged on various issues of common interest. Mrs Evangellou congratulated the management and staff of the Melathros for the important and high quality work carried out at the Home for the Elderly alongside the Rehabilitation Unit.
Subsequently, Ms Evangellou held a meeting with Metropolitan Athanasios of Limassol, with whom she discussed ways of strengthening cooperation in the areas of social welfare and protection of vulnerable citizens, with emphasis on the elderly, while she was informed about the social benefit programmes and the offer of the Limassol Metropolis.
The Deputy Minister of Social Welfare stressed the importance she attaches to the Government's cooperation with institutions and bodies of local communities in order to further strengthen the supportive environment of vulnerable groups.
Referring to the contribution of the Metropolis of Limassol and the particular sensitivity shown to humanitarian issues and social problems, Ms. Evangelou noted that the Metropolis knows the parish, its people and the challenges they face, which is why the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare attaches particular importance and always responds positively to further cooperation between them.
