A delegation of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign and European Affairs/Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Committee (IPCC) of Cyprus-Armenia continues its official visit to Armenia. The delegation is headed by the Chairman of the Committee, Mr. Harris Georgiades, and includes Mr. Marios Mavridis (Deputy Chairman), Mr. Giorgos Loukaidis, Marina Nikolaou, Mr. Chrisis Pantelidis, Mr. Marios Karoyan and the Representative of the Armenian Religious Group in the Parliament, Mr. Vartkes Mahtesian. The delegation was accompanied by the Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to Armenia (based in Moscow) Mr. Cyprus Yiorgallis.

Yesterday afternoon, the delegation was received by the Prime Minister of Armenia Mr. Nikol Pashinyan and the President of the Republic Mr. Vahagn Khachaturyan.

During the meetings, the Cypriot MPs were extensively briefed on the challenges facing the Armenian government in light of the new realities created by Azerbaijan's military offensive against the Armenian population of Nagorno Karabakh, including the humanitarian crisis and especially the threats of Azerbaijan and Turkey against the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of Armenia.

Armenian officials underlined Armenia's determination to achieve peace and expressed sincere thanks for Cyprus' absolute commitment to international legitimacy and its unwavering support for Armenia's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. They underlined the need for the international community to demonstrate a similar attitude.

For their part, the Cypriot MPs referred to the current situation regarding the Cyprus problem and the unacceptable claim of the Turkish side for a "two-state solution" and its intransigent attitude to the efforts being made for the resumption of talks to reach a solution in accordance with the relevant UN resolutions. They underlined that Cyprus and Armenia face common challenges due to the expansionist ambitions of Turkey and Azerbaijan and reiterated the readiness of the Republic of Cyprus to convey and support Armenia's positions within the European Union and in other international fora, in the hope that all democratic countries will actively stand by Armenia.

The Armenian officials wished that conditions would soon be created for the resumption of talks to find a solution to the Cyprus problem and reaffirmed Armenia's firm principled position, stressing that support at the international level on the national issues of the two countries is two-way and mutual.

Both sides expressed their sincere desire to further strengthen relations and cooperation between Cyprus and Armenia in all areas, with particular emphasis on the economy, trade and tourism.

In addition, within the framework of the visit, the Cypriot MPs visited the Armenian Genocide Memorial in Yerevan and paid tribute to the victims of the Genocide. The Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign and European Affairs and President of the IES Mr Georgiades laid a wreath and signed the visitors' book of the Armenian Genocide Museum.

The delegation will return to Cyprus tomorrow.
