[PIO] Contacts of Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombou in Washington DC

Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos, who is visiting the United States of America (USA), represented the Government of Cyprus at the 39th WCCA World Congress, which took place in Washington DC between 11-13 June 2024. This year's proceedings of the Congress were dedicated to the black anniversary of the 50th anniversary of the Turkish invasion and occupation. During the proceedings, Senator Paul Sarbanes and his son Congressman John Sarbanes were honored for their enduring contribution to Cyprus.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs addressed the proceedings of the Conference and provided an update on the latest developments in the Cyprus problem and the Government's ongoing efforts to resume talks aimed at reaching a solution and reuniting our country.

He also referred to the bilateral relations between Cyprus and the USA, as well as to the decisive contribution of Cypriots living abroad both in relation to the Cyprus problem and towards the further strengthening of Cyprus' relations with the USA.

On the sidelines of the Conference, the photo exhibition "50 years of invasion and occupation", consisting of photographs of the Press and Information Office (PIO) from the tragic summer of 1974, was inaugurated.

During his stay in the US capital, Mr. Combos had a series of meetings and contacts with members of Congress and the US Senate. Among others, he held a meeting with the Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the US Senate, Senator Ben Cardin. He also had the opportunity to meet with Mr. Chris van Hollen and Mr. Chris Coons, members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He also met with Senator Chuck Schumer and Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, who lead the Democratic caucus in the Senate and Congress. He also had bilateral meetings with longtime friend of Cyprus Congressman Gus Bilirakis, and Congressman and member of the Congressional Foreign Affairs Committee Brad Schneider.

Yesterday, Wednesday, June 12, the Secretary of State met with USAID Chief of Staff Ms. Samantha Power, with whom he discussed the humanitarian situation in Gaza and the contribution of the Humanitarian Corridor as a complementary humanitarian aid route.

The Foreign Minister will travel to New York today, Thursday, June 13, where, among other things, he will be the keynote speaker at an event at the United Nations Headquarters to mark the 60th anniversary of UNFICYP's presence in Cyprus. He will also attend an event at the United Nations Headquarters on Cyprus' candidacy for the Human Rights Council for the period 2025-2027.
