e-kalathi: These would be your choices today!!!

The Consumer Protection Agency believes that "e-kalathi" will be an important tool for improving transparency in the market, as it will provide the consumer with instant information, on a daily basis, on the prices of basic products for a household.

In this context, the Consumer Protection Service presents indicatively the information and choices that consumers could have today if they had the electronic application "e-kalathi" at their disposal.

In particular, inspectors of the Service recorded today, September 25, 2023, the prices of basic products in 5 supermarkets per province. As shown in the tables below, in Nicosia District 37 "common products" were identified out of a total of 51 searched, for which 37 products the total cost currently ranges from €147.06 to €160.83 (€13.77 difference). In the Limassol District, 40 "common products" were identified, with total costs ranging from €153.61 to €174.45 (€20.84 difference). In Larnaca District 39 "common products" were found, with total costs ranging from €130,36 to €157,56 (€27,20 difference). Finally, 36 "common products" were found in the Paphos District, with total costs ranging from €121.05 to €137.74 (€16.69 difference).

The above shows that, if the "e-kalathi" online platform were available today, consumers would gain significant economic benefit, as it would indicate the cheapest point of sale in their province for the specific shopping list and, in addition, would provide them with full information on the prices of products and their availability at the various points. The full results of the survey are available at website here ("Results by Province").

For the above reasons, the Consumer Protection Service considers that the adoption of the electronic platform "e-kalathi" will be an important and useful tool in the hands of Cypriot consumers.
