The National Contact Point of the European Migration Network announces the holding of a conference on Hate Speech in Public Debate on Thursday, 26 October 2023, from 9 am to 4 pm,

Xenophobia and hate speech are two interrelated phenomena that often challenge the values of democracy, human dignity, freedom, equality, respect for human rights and the rule of law. The aim of the Conference is to contribute to a fruitful debate on the implementation and effectiveness of national and Community legislation to identify and thus combat incidents of xenophobia and hate speech. The objectives of the EU Action Plan against Racism 2020-2025 set the ground for Member States to actively address this issue and through various actions, to combat this phenomenon.

Among the speakers are the Head of the Department for Coordination and Monitoring of Refugee Education of the Greek Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports, the Deputy Head of the European Commission Representation in Cyprus, academics from the Universities of Cyprus and Nicosia, the President of the Cyprus Union of Journalists, members of the Journalists' Ethics Committee, journalists, representatives from the Press and Information Office, the Office of the Commissioner for Administration and Protection of Human Rights, and the Ministry of Education/Institute of Education, as well as a representative of the NGO Sistema Cyprus.
