The Forestry Department, responding to the request of the Cultural Foundation KERINEIA-HRYSOKAVA for the donation of a fir tree trunk, delivered today to the small boat yard in Limassol (Karnayo) a 13m long fir tree trunk.

The log will be used to replace the mast of the primitive experimental vessel "KERYNEIA-ELEFTHERIA", which is a replica of the ancient ship of Kyrenia (built in 389 BC).Since its construction, the "KERINEIA-ELEFTHERIA" has been involved in many maritime archaeology experiments and has taken part in a large number of cultural and other activities and events, culminating in its monumental voyage to Greece in 2004, on the occasion of the Olympic Games.

The forests and timber of Cyprus have been exploited by man since ancient times. The forests were the place where people lived and survived. They were used for various purposes, such as preparing food, heating, making pots, tools and furniture, building houses, constructing ships and much, much more. With the passage of time and with the change and use of various other methods and materials, the use of forests, especially in Cyprus, has decreased to a minimum, since they are now a place more for environmental reasons and for recreation than for commercial exploitation.

The Department of Forests tries through various actions and initiatives to highlight the value of the forest and its direct connection, over time, with man.

The Department of Forests tries through various actions and initiatives to highlight the value of the forest and its direct connection, over time, with man. In this way we also contribute actively to the continuation of traditional uses of timber, professions and arts of Cyprus.
