The Cyprus Organization for Standardization (CYS) completed the second phase of the project "Moving Forward to a New Digital Era through Standardization", which included the organization and implementation of three national workshops focusing on the key objectives of the project:

  1. Training on the initiatives of the German Electrotechnical Standardisation Organisation (DKE) to attract the younger generation to standardisation activities and developing an action plan to bridge the gap between young people and the standardisation sector, strengthening the links and involvement of the younger generation in standardisation activities.
  2. Update on DKE's training and mentoring activities in the new digital era and discuss how to improve the CYS training framework by integrating digital solutions into its activities, and assess the need to develop and implement the mentoring programme in Cyprus
  3. Training on digital standards and DKE's digitalisation processes and procedures, identify the needs for adopting digital solutions in CYS standardisation activities with the participation of stakeholders, and

CYS[/B]National Workshop[/B] "Attracting the New Generation to Standardization"

On Monday, 4 March 2024, the CYS National Workshop on the New Generation of Standardization was held. The workshop was held in the framework of the European project under Erasmus+ entitled "DigiSTAN - Moving Forward to a New Digital Era through Standardisation" with DKE as partner.

The first part of the workshop highlighted the fundamentals of standardisation, analysing the mission of CYS, the national structure of the standardisation system, as well as the stages that determine the process of developing a standard.

The representative of the Young Scientists Programme in Germany, Mr. Batuhan Mehmet Ayaz, Young Ambassador, presented the approaches, actions and activities implemented by DKE in Germany to enhance the involvement of young people in standardisation activities.

The workshop participants gained valuable insights into their professional development opportunities by getting involved in standardisation activities. During the workshop, the importance of standardisation for professional development and enhancing collaboration in different fields, in particular IT and Electrotechnology, was highlighted.

Participants also gained knowledge about the benefits of participating in standardisation and became familiar with the DKE Quest Tool, which is an innovative game-tool for understanding basic principles of standardisation and the process of developing a standard. At the same time, it promotes collaboration between people from different fields of activity, cultures and environments.

Furthermore, they were given the opportunity to explore networking opportunities at European and international level, discovering career prospects by engaging in standardisation activities.

Overall, the workshop provided a framework for the exchange of knowledge and contributions. Participants were encouraged to actively contribute to the discussions held during the workshop, thus shaping the future for the next generation of standardisation professionals through the possibility of joining the first network for young scientists in the field of standardisation.

National Workshop on e-Mentoring and e-Learning

On 7 and 8 March 2024, CYS organised the second of a series of national workshops dedicated to the important issues of e-mentoring and e-learning in Nicosia. The workshop served as a dynamic platform for collaboration, in which national representatives and members of the National and Reflective Committees worked together to identify needs in CYS training and mentoring activities. This initiative marked a critical step in creating strategies that are adapted to the demands of the digital age, aiming to improve the areas of education and guidance for standardization stakeholders.

The workshop included informative presentations by DKE experts. In particular, Ms. Ute Schmidt, responsible for DKE's training strategies, and Mr. Christian Marian, Project Manager with expertise in Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies, shared their valuable knowledge and experience. These interactive presentations were a catalyst for vital discussions around the realization of the workshop objectives, while the participating national experts actively contributed, highlighting critical activities for improvement and making innovative suggestions for CYS e-guidance and education issues.

A key achievement of the workshop was the creation of a collaborative environment, which encouraged all participants to freely exchange their ideas, contributions and suggestions. This collaborative atmosphere not only deepened CYS' understanding of existing challenges, but also contributed to planning the future of standardization in the areas of learning and mentoring in the digital age.

The strategies and ideas developed during these two days are expected to lay the foundations for the implementation of new proposals in the areas of learning and mentoring in standardization. Looking ahead, CYS is committed to incorporating the feedback and suggestions received into its operational structures, processes and procedures to adapt to the digital standardization environment.

National Workshop on digitalisation of processes and digitally-smart standards

CYS organised the last workshop, which included a series of meetings on the digital transformation of standardisation processes, as well as informing stakeholders and Cypriot industry about digitally-smart standards. This event was specifically designed for stakeholders and experts involved or interested in the future and implementation of digital standards in Cyprus, as well as the development of digitized processes within CYS that may impact these activities and expert engagement. The national workshop was a two-day event held on 27 and 28 March 2024 at a venue in Nicosia.

The workshop served as a dynamic platform for a meaningful discussion on the digital transformation of standardization processes within CYS and focused on the activities implemented for the development and implementation of digital and smart standards and the benefits arising from them. CYS was honoured to host two distinguished experts from DKE, Mr. Konstantinos Petridis, leading the digital transformation of processes at DKE, and Mr. Raymond Puppan, driving force behind the development and implementation of digital-smart standards. The experts shared with the stakeholders their valuable experiences and knowledge from the activities in Germany, offering a detailed update on progress and future plans in the field of digital standardization and digital standards, as well as the difficulties encountered in the course of their implementation.

The structure of the workshop enabled an intensive exchange of ideas and helped to create stronger links between CYS and DKE experts, thus enriching the experience Participants made important contributions, identifying gaps and shortcomings in current standardization processes, the need to transition to a digital environment, while gaining knowledge about practices and tools as implemented in Germany.

The workshop included interactive sessions where CYS participants had the opportunity to discuss the challenges and gaps they face in participating in standardization activities, focusing in particular on the required digital tools and identifying Emphasis was also placed on the digitisation of processes to ensure accessibility of all relevant engagement content, as well as training for participation in standardisation activities.

The knowledge gained and the relationships fostered during this workshop, both between the Cyprus and German experts and between the workshop participants themselves, will contribute significantly to the digital standardisation sector in Cyprus. CYS is expected to take the necessary actions for the future and its own digital transformation in order to make standardization activities accessible to all and to lay the foundations for the adoption of digital standards in Cyprus as well.
