The Training Programme for all Primary, Pre-School and Special Education teachers was successfully completed on Friday, 8 September 2023, an action which takes place during the first days of September (first week of operation of Primary, Special and Pre-School schools). In each province, the two-day event was held on two different days, including both central and in-school training.
Based on the data collected by the Pedagogical Institute, 5785 teachers attended the two-day training sessions. In order to participate in the central training, teachers were able to select through the online platform of the Pedagogical Institute the thematic module they were interested in. The central training included 93 different seminar titles, which were taught by 153 facilitators, while 181 different teacher training groups operated nationwide. The coverage of the topics included in the two-day trainings was undertaken by officials and external collaborators of the Pedagogical Institute and the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth, as well as members of academic staff from public and private universities in Cyprus. In addition, issues of general teaching and pedagogy were covered, including differentiation of teaching and learning, assessment of the student, management of conflicts and incidents of misbehaviour, development of digital skills, smooth transition from primary to secondary school, etc. The topics offered were formulated on the basis of a diagnosis of teachers' own needs through the evaluations of individual training activities of the Pedagogical Institute, while suggestions for seminar topics were collected from the Directorate of Primary Education and teachers' representatives (PDED).
During the day of the in-school training, each school focused on the formulation of the Action Plan for Professional Learning, within the framework of the organization of the Unified School Improvement Plan. Teachers also had the opportunity, as part of the in-school training, to discuss and inform the rest of the school staff about the content of the central trainings they had attended and how to use them in the context of the Action Plan for Professional Learning.
