The Department of Agriculture of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment. within the framework of the enlightenment campaign for the protection of bees and other pollinators and in view of the flowering of fruit trees, as well as the transfer of bees near tree or other crops, wishes to inform the public that no spraying of any kind of bee-toxic preparations is allowed at the flowering stage.
Careful reading of the label of the plant protection product before application is essential to protect bees. Failure to follow these instructions is an offence under the Plant Protection Products Act 2011. In addition, all professional users of plant protection products (farmers, gardeners, municipal/community workers, etc.etc) are obliged to inform potentially affected beekeepers before the start of any spraying, so that they can take the necessary risk mitigation measures.
Beekeepers are reminded that beekeepers are obliged to indicate their full name, address and/or telephone number (optional) at each apiary. Also, on the back of each hive there must be the appropriate marking, as defined by the Department of Agriculture (Initially District L, LE, LA, P, A - Beekeeping Register No. - Hive No.) for easy identification and identification of the holder: e.g. L - 155 - 10.
In cases where it is necessary to remove the apiary for any reason from the area, the relevant District Agricultural Office should be informed immediately of the relevant markings on the hives or apiary in order to identify the owner of the hives.
