The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment presented today at a press conference the plan of actions to effectively tackle illegal and uncontrolled waste dumping.
Environment Commissioner Antonia Theodosiou welcomes the initiative of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to effectively tackle this phenomenon which has very serious consequences for the environment and public health, and which, at the same time, is one of the main factors causing fires.
The Office of the Environment Commissioner expresses its readiness and willingness to stand by and assist, within the framework of its competences, through synergies with stakeholders - governmental and non-governmental -, NGOs, Communities and Clusters as they have been formed after the reform of Local Government, to implement the action plan as defined.
Ms Theodosiou stresses the need for collective action by the relevant departments and agencies, but also the need for individual responsibility by citizens. No action plan and no planning, funding or other tools to address this chronic problem can bring results unless each and every one of us is committed to its holistic prevention.
The Office of the Environment Commissioner has over the years organised and participated in cleanliness and public awareness campaigns and in this context is planning an action in the area of the Pediaion River, which originates from the peaks of Machairas with its valuable state forests and ends in Famagusta Bay. The Office also participates in coordinated actions and programmes for the circular economy, as well as for information and environmental education of citizens and schools. Furthermore, the Office of the Environment Commissioner has already started to implement actions with Clusters of Communities with the aim of their transition to climate neutrality and sustainable development.
The common goal of all of us is a clean, green and climate neutral Cyprus, in line with the Governance Programme of the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr.
The Office of the Environment Commissioner supports and participates in the campaign, Cyprus free of waste #wastefreeCyprus, which starts today.
