Regarding the above issue, I wish to inform all interested parties that the consultation process between the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth (MESY) and my Office has been successfully completed.
The CFCA carried out an impact assessment on the operation of Closed Circuit Video Surveillance (CCTV) in schools to prevent and address violence and delinquency, which it submitted to my Office for consultation.
According to this impact assessment,
a. Video cameras will be installed at the main entrances/exits of the schools and around the perimeter of the schools.
b. The recording range will be limited to within the boundaries of the school units and no adjacent private or public areas will be recorded.
c. The CCTV will be activated during off-hours of the school units.
d. The visualized material will be stored for a period of 72 hours.
e. Strictly limited access to the audiovisual material.
f. Warning signs will be posted for information.
In light of what has been put before me and following yesterday's confirmation of the adoption of my final comments and suggestions, I have found that the impact assessment meets the requirements of Article 35 of the GDPR and, therefore, I have approved the installation of CCTV in schools.
Consequently, the MFA, as controller, is able and may initiate the relevant processing activities and operations that were the subject of the submitted impact assessment.
In a first stage, the operation of the KIBP will be piloted in 10 school units.
