The Commissioner of the Presidency had a meeting today at his office with the Serbian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr.Nemanja Starović, who is on an official visit to Cyprus.

During the meeting, ways and means of implementing the Cyprus-Serbia Memorandum of Cooperation on diaspora issues were discussed. Fotiou said during the meeting that the aim is to bring the peoples of our two countries living abroad and in our countries closer together through events and actions that promote the history, culture, customs and traditions of our countries, adding that cooperation on diaspora issues will further strengthen the friendly relations between the two countries.

The Commissioner for the Presidency also briefed Mr. Starović on other issues within his competence. Particular reference was made by Mr. Fotiou to the difficulties and problems faced by efforts to solve the problem of the missing persons for the benefit of the suffering families.

Mr. Fotiou pointed out that the lack of progress on a humanitarian issue that has been pending for so many decades is due to the lack of cooperation and assistance from the occupying power. It is unacceptable, he stressed, that for half a century families in Cyprus have been experiencing the daily torment of uncertainty about the fate of their loved ones.

For his part, Mr. Starović expressed his and his country's support for the suffering families, noting that his country is facing a similar problem which, as in Cyprus, causes daily pain and suffering to families.

During the meeting it was also decided to explore ways for the two countries to exchange their accumulated experiences that would aim and contribute to strengthening efforts to provide answers to the families of the missing persons in Cyprus and Serbia.

In conclusion, the Commissioner stressed once again the excellent relations between the Republic of Cyprus and Serbia, as well as the successful implementation of the Bilateral Memorandum of Cooperation.
