The commemoration ceremony for the 73rd anniversary of the closure of the detention camps for Jewish refugees and survivors of the Holocaust took place today at the "Vasilios Kapota" camp.
During the three-year period 1946-1949, over fifty thousand Jewish refugees passed through Cyprus on their way to Israel and were detained in camps in the Famagusta area.
The ceremony was attended, among others, by the Minister of Defence Mr. Haralambos Petrides and the Ambassador of Israel to Cyprus Mr. Oren Anolik.
In his greeting Mr. Petrides praised the attitude of Cypriots who, despite the adverse conditions, stood by Jewish refugees, offering them support and assistance to improve their living conditions.
Mr. Petrides stressed that the monument at the "Vasilios Kapota" camp is an essential proof of the long-standing friendship between Cyprus and Israel as well as the strong human ties forged in the period 1946-1949.
In conclusion, the Defence Minister referred to the war situation in Ukraine, stressing that the Republic of Cyprus expresses its support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, noting Cyprus' readiness to send humanitarian aid.
