The State will stand by the side of those affected by the fire in communities in Paphos District, Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou assured today. Speaking after the Cabinet meeting, Ioannou said that 49 people from the affected communities were accommodated in a Paphos hotel after coordinated actions by the Paphos District Administration and the Civil Defence.

"Today an assessment of the situation of the residences after the restoration of electricity is being carried out in order to decide who will return. The rest will continue to be accommodated. Also, as of this morning, crews from the Provincial Administration are on site to record and assess the damage. So far 14 houses have been affected, of which two have been completely destroyed," Ioannou pointed out. According to the update from the Paphos District Administration, in the Polemiu Community, four individual houses have been affected, of which two have been completely destroyed, as well as a photovoltaic park. The District Administration's crews are continuing to record damage to two residences in the Houlou Community.

"The assessment will continue and the assurance we can give is that, after the damage assessment, all licensed premises will be compensated, whether they are commercial premises or residences, as has been done in previous similar cases," said Mr.

Asked about the amount of compensation that will be granted, the Interior Minister explained that this depends on the estimates and cited as an example a previous case where for damages up to €100,000 the full amount was compensated. In other cases, he added, 80% was compensated. "An estimate will be made, we will see the maximum we can compensate for licensed, I repeat, premises," he said."

Ioannou reiterated the assurance that there should be "no concern from the people, in terms of the Government's support for the destruction of their homes or their business premises, if they are licensed.

Asked whether he would visit the area, the Interior Minister said that, at this stage, the Ministers of Agriculture and Justice were responsible and noted that a visit was planned in the next few days, once the survey of the damage by the Paphos District Administration crews had been completed. The most important thing, he explained, at this moment is to stand by the people who have been affected and resolve any problem that arises. The recording and assessment of the damages will proceed quickly, within days, as happened in the Limassol District with the tornado last February. Don't forget that even fires rage", said Mr. Ioannou.
