The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works has issued a call for tenders for the construction of artificial reefs in the marine protected areas (MPAs) of Geroskipou, Larnaca and "Dasoudi" Limassol and Paralimni and Ayia Napa, with a total budget of €2.6 million for the three projects.
More specifically, the main elements of the three projects are summarised as follows.000 sq.m. [*]Area between the premises of the Cyprus Tourism Organisation restaurant in Geroskipou and the channel of Paphos International Airport (mouth of the river Ezousa). [*] Part of the structures are located in close proximity and around the perimeter of the sunken Laboe vessel and to the east and west of the edge of the vessel at distances of approximately 10-40 metres. [*]Creation of a new mooring point for visiting vessels. [/LIST]
The project is co-funded by the European Union's Operational Programme "Sea 2014-2020" and the Republic of Cyprus. The cost of the project is estimated at €546,000, including VAT. The contract is expected to be signed next May and the duration of the project is 12 months.
2. Larnaca Marine Protected Areas and "Dasoudi" Limassol:
Larnaca Marine Protected Area:
- Construction of an artificial reef in the Larnaca Marine Protected Area located in the Oroklini area and occupying 2.200,000 sq.m.
- 1,200 metres west of the administrative boundary of the British Bases with the southern end being around 2,600 metres from the coast.
- Part of the structures are placed in close proximity to and around the Hope vessel and the LEF1 vessel.
- Establishment of three mooring points for vessels visiting the reef area.
ii)
- Construction of an artificial reef with a surface area of 1.450.000 sq.m.
- Area between the Crowne Plaza Hotel to the west with extension 1.000 metres to the east, before the premises of the Cyprus Tourism Organisation restaurant in the 'Dasoudi' area.
- Part of the structures are placed in close proximity and around the sunken vessel 'Lady Thetis'.
- Creation of a mooring point for boats visiting the reef area.
The project is co-funded by the European Union's Operational Programme "Sea 2014-2020" and the Republic of Cyprus. The cost of the project is estimated at €1.23 million, including VAT. The contract is expected to be signed next May and the duration of the project is 12 months.
3. Paralimni and Ayia Napa Marine Protected Areas:
i) Paralimni Marine Protected Area:
- Construction of an artificial reef occupying 630.000 m2
- 500 m north of the existing Paralimni fishing shelter.
- Part of the structures are placed in close proximity to and around the sunken vessels 'NEMESIS III' and 'LIBERTY'.
- Creation of a mooring point for vessels visiting the reef area.
ii) Agia Napa Marine Protected Area:
- Construction of an artificial reef occupying 1,850,000 m2
- 1,700 m west of the existing Agia Napa fishing shelter.
- Part of the construction is placed in close proximity to and around the built vessel "KERYNEIA"
The project is co-funded by the European Union's Operational Programme "Sea 2014-2020" and the Republic of Cyprus. The cost of the project is estimated at €770,000, including VAT. The contract is expected to be signed next May and its duration is 12 months.
It should be noted that the studies for all three projects were carried out by the Marine Projects Branch of the Public Works Department of the Ministry.
