The Statistical Office announces that the number of building permits issued by municipal authorities and provincial administrations in September 2023 amounted to 612. The total value of these permits reached €275.4 million and the total area reached 214.1 thousand square meters. With these permits, 1,030 residential units are planned to be built.
In the period January-September 2023, 5,274 building permits were issued, compared to 5,701 in the same period of the previous year, a decrease of 7.5%. The total value of these permits increased by 15.7% and the total area by 2.9%. The number of housing units increased by 8.6%.
Building permits are an important indicator of future activity in the construction sector.

Methodological Information
Purpose and Coverage
The purpose is to collect basic data concerning residential and non-residential buildings as well as other construction activities such as civil engineering projects, land division and road construction, by province (urban and rural areas). For each project category, information is compiled on the number of permits issued, the area and value of the project and the number of housing units planned to be built.
All building permits issued by local government authorities, i.e. town halls, provincial administrations of the Ministry of Interior and Agios Tychon Community Council, are covered.
Data collection
The Statistical Service receives on a monthly basis from all local government authorities copies of all building permit forms issued by them. The information contained in the forms is appropriately coded by the Statistics Office to produce the statistics. The EU Classification of Construction (CC) is used to categorise the different building projects.

Note that the Predefined Tables in Excel format include data up to December 2022. For January 2023 and onwards, the update is done only in the CYSTAT-DB Database.
