The Statistical Office announces that the number of building permits issued by municipal authorities and provincial administrations in February 2024 amounted to 706. The total value of these permits reached €248.9 million and the total area reached 202.6 thousand square meters. With these permits, 919 residential units are planned to be built.
In the period January - February 2024, 1,293 building permits were issued compared to 1,143 in the same period of the previous year, an increase of 13.1%. The total value of these permits increased by 16.9% and the total floor area by 14.3%. The number of housing units increased by 13.4%.
Building permits are an important indicator of future activity in the construction sector.

Methodological Information
Purpose and coverage
The purpose is to collect basic data concerning residential and non-residential buildings, as well as other building activities such as civil engineering works, land division and road construction, by province (urban and rural areas). For each project category, information is compiled on the number of permits issued, the area and value of the project and the number of housing units planned to be built.
All building permits issued by the Local Authorities, i.e. the Town Halls, the Provincial Administrations of the Ministry of Interior and the Community Council of Agios Tychonas are covered.
Data collection
The Statistical Service receives on a monthly basis from all Local Government Authorities copies of all building permit forms issued by them. The information contained in the forms is appropriately coded by the Statistical Office to produce the statistics. The EU Classification of Construction (CC) is used to categorise the different building projects.

The Predefined Tables in Excel format include data up to December 2022. For January 2023 and thereafter, the update is done only in the CYSTAT-DB Database.
