Increase in both Area (4.3%) and Value (16.4%)
The Statistical Office announces that the number of building permits issued by municipal authorities and provincial administrations in December 2023 amounted to 587. The total value of these permits reached €242.2 million and the total area reached 203.4 thousand square meters. With these permits, 942 residential units are planned to be built.
In the period January - December 2023, 7,170 building permits were issued, compared to 7,604 in the same period of the previous year, a decrease of 5.7%. The total value of these permits increased by 16.4% and the total area by 4.3%. The number of residential units showed an increase of 12.2%.
Building permits are an important indicator of future activity in the construction sector.

Methodological Information
Purpose and Coverage
The purpose is to collect basic data on residential and non-residential buildings and other construction activities, such as civil engineering works, land division and road construction by province (urban and rural areas). For each category of project, information is compiled on the number of permits issued, the area and value of the project and the number of housing units planned to be built.
All building permits issued by the local administration authorities, namely the town halls, the provincial administrations of the Ministry of Interior and the Community Council of Agios Tychonas are covered.
Data collection
The Statistical Service receives on a monthly basis from all local administration authorities copies of all building permit forms issued by them. The information contained in the forms is appropriately coded by the Statistics Office to produce the statistics. The EU Classification of Construction (CC) is used to categorise the different building projects.

The Predefined Tables in Excel format include data up to December 2022. For January 2023 and thereafter, the update is made only in the CYSTAT-DB Database.
